PassBuddyMaking Apple Wallet infrastructure feel like a form builder.

A hosted platform for designing, distributing, tracking, and updating Apple Wallet passes without building the certificate and push-notification infrastructure in-house.

Overview

An Apple Wallet pass looks simple to the person tapping Add, but shipping one requires signed packages, certificates, hosted distribution, device registration, web-service endpoints, and APNs updates. PassBuddy turns that infrastructure into a product that an organizer or developer can use in minutes.

We designed the dashboard and API around the complete pass lifecycle: build a pass visually, publish a hosted share page, watch installs, update fields, and notify every registered device without asking the end user to reinstall anything.

The challenge

The product had to hide Apple's operational complexity without hiding useful control. It also needed to support non-technical teams through a visual builder and technical teams through a clean API, while keeping certificates, generated artifacts, registration state, usage, and billing secure.

The approach
01

Turn pass creation into a visual workflow

Teams choose colors, logos, fields, and barcodes in a live preview. PassBuddy generates, signs, and hosts the .pkpass artifact, then creates a public share page with a QR code and Add to Apple Wallet action.

02

Own the lifecycle after installation

Device registration, install tracking, real-time field updates, and push notifications are built into the platform. A focused REST API gives developers the same lifecycle controls programmatically.

03

Rebuild the foundation for scale

We migrated authentication and application data to Clerk and Convex, moved generated assets to R2, introduced entitlement-backed billing, and built a controlled migration path for existing product data and relationships.
